OpenSSL will be used to make the ssl certificates used by the OpenLDAP server. OpenLDAP will be used to store the user information for a variety of different reasons, from samba backend to postfix ldap aliases. With the extra security of the OpenSSL certificates OpenLDAP can now be used over an in-secure network (ie: the internet).

Setup two OpenLDAP servers, one Master, one Slave, so when an entry in one of the servers is changed it is automatically changed in the other server. This is handy so you can distribute the load between the two servers, use one of the servers for one set of programs and use the other server for a different set of programs.

OpenLDAP is a directory server based on the LDAP protocol, that same protocol M$ Active Directory is based on. It is used to store user information in an easily accessible database that can integrate into different applications. Postfix is a Mail Transfer Agent that will use the ldap database to look up users and aliases.
